Well…yeah…yesterday was a giant clusterfuck for people wanting to buy the new iPhone, and like always, you can pretty much put the blame on AT&T, who has now put a hold on pre-orders. What happened? Well, according to various sources, AT&T’s systems didn’t expect the surge of pre-orders for the new iPhone 4, and of course choked when millions of people tried to pre-order it around the same time.
Now according to various sources, not ONLY was AT&T unable to handle the onslaught of people trying to find out their eligibility for a discounted iPhone, but they ALSO had security issues as well, with people’s information being exposed to others, and orders actually going to the wrong people. Despite this, apparently 600,000 people were successfully able to pre-order an iPhone for arrival on the June 24th date (or now a date of up to July 14th according to MacRumors, depending on when you pre-ordered it).
Sadly, yesterday’s series of snafus left many people frustrated and even more angry at AT&T, and honestly rightfully so. With their recent change to their data plans, the announcement of fairly expensive tethering (which will require one of the new, capped data plans rather than the current “unlimited” plan) and service not seeming to get any better, I’m honestly surprised people aren’t defecting in droves. I’ve been tempted to my own self, I have to admit. I love the iPhone, despite it being a walled garden, and despite AT&T’s crappiness and shiftiness I plan to stay with them and get a new iPhone in a couple of months once the fervor has died down.
So what about you, fellow iPhone users? Did you try to pre-order an iPhone yesterday? Were you successful, or did you keep running into walls? Are you planning to move to another carrier and another phone? I’d love to hear your comments in the…um…comments section.
Thanks for reading.
