For the past thirty years, my gaming has been primarily on the PC (with dabbles into Atari consoles and more recently, the Sega Dreamcast), but that seems to have all changed recently with the acquisition of my first console in ten years, a Playstation 3. Now I got the PS3 primarly as a mixture of Blu-ray player and media center…I mean the games looked kinda cool, but I had plenty on my (admittedly old) PC to play, so I figured I wouldn’t really play too many. Boy was I wrong…

In the past two months, I’ve not played one PC game. I’ve rather been playing PS3 games like Burnout Paradise, inFamous, Prototype, Uncharted, Ghostbusters: The Game and several more. I used to have the apparent misconception that console games were just shallow runny-jumpy-actiony titles, but boy was I wrong. Console games are fun, deep, engaging and engrossing. The games I’ve played most so far are Burnout Paradise and inFamous, and I’m not even that great at them, since I still kinda stink with a gamepad. However, the more I play, the better I get, and the more enjoyable these games become.

I mean it was a switch, for sure. I’d originally try games on “normal” difficulty, as that’s what I did on my PC, and then get frustrated when I kept dying and restarting in games like Batman: Arkham Asylum or Assassin’s Creed. That actually made me stop playing them for a while, as I was pretty frustrated at dying so much. Then I played Uncharted — awesome game — on easy and it began to click. Now I’m playing those other games on easy and doing better, which is not only due to their reduced difficulty, but also because I feel I have better control. It’s still a challenge since I’m still so used to a keyboard and mouse or a joystick, rather than these little analog sticks on the gamepad, but I’m getting there.

So yeah, Hell might just be freezing over, because I’m pretty much a person I kept saying I’d never be…a console gamer. Now is the fact that I’m playing only PS3 games attributed to its newness and shininess? It’s possible. Will I eventually go back to playing games on the PC? Pretty likely, but for now, I’ll be on my couch, leaping from buildings or crashing into cars on my big screen HDTV. :)

What about you? Any of y’all made the switch to consoles recently, or are considering it? Do you only play games on consoles now? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments. Thanks for reading!
