Anyone who knows me know that my biggest love in gaming is space combat simulations. I’ve sunk more hours into games like Freespace 2, Tie Fighter, all of the Wing Commander games and so on. Sadly the genre really took a dive around 2000, with many companies pulling away from the genre. Thankfully there have been Eastern European developers making space sims, as well as independent developers such as StarWraith 3D Games.

This is pretty much a one-man operation to make fun, approachable and deep space sims, and they’ve really succeeded. I’ve played pretty much every game in the series, and they’re loads of fun. Thankfully, the series is moving right along with the announcement of the announcement of Evochron Mercenary, their latest open space combat sim. What I mean by that is, rather than given a linear series of missions (as with games like Wing Commander, Freespace and so on), you’re given the freedom to do what you want in an open space environment (like Elite, Privateer or the X games).

I’ve put a good amount of time in their current game, Evochron Legends, and I’m terribly thrilled about this new installment in the series. If you have any interest at all in space exploration, trade or combat, head over to the main StarWraith 3D Games for more info.
