This Saturday, in Los Angeles, there will be a midnight showing of “Transformers: The Movie”. No, not the Michael Bay pieces of crap, we’re talking the original 1986 animated film that many people in my generation consider a beloved and seminal piece of work…so of course I’m going. ;) (Thanks to my friend Josh for the tip on the screening, BTW, which you can learn more about here if you’re in LA).

I am an unabashed fan of Batman and DC Animation. If a show or movie has been released that has anything to do with Bruce Timm, Paul Dini or Alan Burnett, I own it. That bias aside, I was very excited when DC Animated announced Batman: Under the Red Hood. I’ve not read all of the Batman comics, but the series involving the Red Hood was always a gripping yarn of a tale, so I knew the movie would be good. I had no idea, however, that it would be THIS good…

According to an article on Ars Technica entitled, Apple loses big in DRM ruling: jailbreaks are “fair use”, the Library of Congress has added a bevy of new exceptions to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act altering the way we’re allowed to use much of the digital media and devices we have.

There’s one main reason I went to see The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. I mean sure it was done by the same folks who did National Treasure — which I loved — but that wasn’t it. I wanted to see how Dresden Filesey it was. What do I mean by this? Well, look at this still from the movie and this book cover from one of the Dresden Files books. See where I’m going? It was with these moderate expectations in mind that I went to see The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, so please read on to read what I thought.

Fifteen years ago, we were introduced to Woody, Buzz, the Potatoheads, Hamm, Rex, Slinky and, most importantly, a little animation company named Pixar. Myself a recent high school graduate at the time, I went to see some strange movie called Toy Story full of equal parts curiosity and cynicism. 90 minutes later, I joined the ranks of an amazed audience that was unprepared for something so original, innovative and thoroughly entertaining. Now, fifteen years and ten movies later, Pixar, now established as the gold standard for quality computer animated features, takes us back to Andy’s toy box for one last…and truly epic…adventure.

A couple of years ago, the first Iron Man took the country by storm, making lots of money and surprising many people — myself included — with just how awesome it was. I’ve never been into Marvel as much as DC, and knew very little about Iron Man going in, but Marvel has made some fine superhero movies, so I went in with reasonable expectations…all of which were blown away.

Cut to two years later, and the inevitable sequel has hit theaters. Is it as much of a slam dunk as the first one, as most superhero sequels are (not the third movies, those usually suck)? Read on…

I finally got around to seeing “Kick-Ass” last Wednesday and I was not disappointed. Not having read the comic, I went in completely fresh to it, only knowing the very basics. I’d also like to mention that I’m pretty happy the character of Hit Girl ended up fitting the archetypes I described in my last article so well.
Warning: This article may contain spoilers.

Remember back in the 80s when an action movie consisted of big explosions, insane firefights and a cast of bitter and cynical anti-heroes? That’s what The Losers tries to recapture. Unfortunately, it’s just not the same. Yes, it has tons of the elements that should make a fun, brainless action flick. It is also, however, a PG-13 movie, which means the filmmakers and the cast never really go for the over-the-top gusto. continue reading…

I’m sure by this point many of you have seen the trailer for the new film “Kick-Ass”, which is based on a comic book series written by Mark Millar and illustrated by John Romita, Jr., published by Marvel Comics.  I am not as privileged as some other bloggers to have seen any kind of sneak preview, and I had never heard of the comic book series until I heard about the film, BUT I am still excited to see it.  Here’s one reason why:

We’ve all been there, I’m sure. We get a new game, a new DVD, a new book series, find a new website, what have you, and we get sucked into it, wholly and fully. For a while, we’re totally enamored with this thing, whether it’s a new TV series, a funny website, or a book series. Eventually, however, we all get to a point where we start feeling less enamored with this new thing, this new obsession, so we take one of many different paths. We take a break from it and return later, quit from it outright, or plow through the burnout.
